A Quick Guide to Fiji
When you think of ‘family’ and ‘holiday’ in the same sentence, it can be hard to look past Fiji. With its postcard-perfect white sand beaches and famously laid-back pace – known as 'Fiji time' – this island paradise offers the ultimate escape from the everyday. Whether you’re dreaming of poolside relaxation, cultural adventures, or splash-filled fun for the kids, Fiji truly has something for all the family.
Here, I’ll touch on how to make the most of your family getaway to one of the South Pacific’s most welcoming and unforgettable spots.
Getting there
Getting to Fiji is surprisingly easy, especially if you're travelling from Australia. With direct flights to Nadi International Airport from major cities including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Cairns. Flight times range from roughly 3.5 to 5.5 hours in length – relatively painless as far as international flights go – so you and the kids can be sipping coconuts by the pool before you know it!
Several airlines offer regular services to Nadi International Airport, making it a hassle-free start to the holiday. I personally recommend opting for an early morning arrival in Fiji – while the very early morning start can be a struggle, there’s nothing better than stepping off the plane, meeting your transfer and settling in with your family for a relaxed first afternoon soaking up the island vibes. It’s the perfect way to ease into 'Fiji time' from the moment you land.
Where to stay and settle in
When it comes to choosing where to stay in Fiji, you’ve got a range of options, two of the most popular being the mainland or one of the stunning Mamanuca Islands.
The mainland – particularly around Denarau or the Coral Coast – is super convenient, especially if you’re traveling with little ones and want to minimise extra travel time after your flight. You’ll still find beautiful beaches, family-friendly resorts, and plenty of cultural experiences right at your doorstep.
But, if you're after that postcard-perfect island escape, hopping over to the Mamanuca Islands is absolutely worth it. These islands are just a short boat ride away and feel like something straight out of a movie.
Fun for all ages
Fiji is one of those places that really delivers what families need on holiday. There’s loads to do if you’re in the mood, but it never feels overwhelming. Younger kids can spend hours paddling in the shallows or making sandcastles on the beach, while older ones might be off snorkelling or trying a kayak or paddle board for the first time. Meanwhile, adults can unwind with a spa treatment, enjoy world-class diving, or simply relax with a cocktail by the pool.
Many resorts offer nanny services and kids’ clubs packed with fun, cultural activities like coconut husking or Fijian dance lessons, giving them a chance to make new friends while parents enjoy some well-earned downtime.
There are also plenty of chances to spend quality time together, from boat trips to tiny nearby islands, to visits to local villages or lazy afternoons by the pool. Some resorts have separate kids’ pools or splash zones, which takes the pressure off if you're travelling with toddlers.
Why Fiji?
One of the things that truly sets Fiji apart is the warmth of its people – Fijian hospitality is second to none. Locals don’t just tolerate kids; they genuinely adore them! From the moment you arrive, you’ll notice how staff light up around children. It’s not uncommon for resort staff to scoop up a toddler for a cuddle or teach older kids a few words in Fijian. That natural warmth and care creates such a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere’s a big part of what makes a family holiday in Fiji feel so special.
